J's Grocery Grand Reopening in Clarksdale, Mississippi!

‘Sipp Talk will be back in The Delta, Friday, May 2nd, for a day filled with community engagement and festivities as Clarksdale welcomes a former staple back into its community with the grand reopening of J’s Grocery store. 

On May 2, 2025, J’s Grocery will celebrate its grand reopening with a full day of youth-centered field day activities and an evening ribbon cutting and cookout.

This is a celebration of the newly renovated grocery store, which will now offer fresh produce from local farmers and other health-building foods to a community which has been left with limited options in terms of fresh produce.  This project is a bold reimagining of how communities in the MS Delta can reclaim access to fresh food and community space.

The event is being led by Rootswell, in collaboration with Partnership for a Healthier America, Griot Arts, and other local stakeholders.will reopen with a focus on community health with offerings of fresh, accessible produce.

The grand reopening will include a field day that will take place from 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM with a Ribbon Cutting Kick off beginning at 5:00 PM that evening, which will feature small bites, a yard party, live entertainment, art, and more. 

Funded by Novo Nordisk, and completed in conjunction with Partnership for a Healthier America, Rootswell, Kudzu Collective and Griot Arts Inc., the new store will be a beacon of light within the community as Clarksdale continues to look forward as the city completes a series of revitalization efforts. 

The day will consist of face painting, cooking demonstrations, a student walking tour of the store, produce giveaways, fitness sessions, and live entertainment. This event is proof that community-led and focused events can be a breeding ground for positive impact when people have the tools to create sustainable and viable food networks. 

By working with local farmers and securing their staples from people invested in their community, Clarksdale is one step closer to shifting its narrative from one of scarcity to a story of abundance and possibility. 

The ‘Sipp Talk team will be attending to experience this community’s revitalization as they forge new connections to sustainable foodways. The store will also have vouchers for fresh produce available through Rootswell, which has been organizing programming to help bring access to healthy foods and eating habits to the Clarksdale community by partnering with local producers and farmers to tackle their needs.

As an extension of Partnership for a Healthy America, Rootswell has been vital in helping the Clarksdale community shift its narrative around food using art and community education to help invigorate residents to reclaim their future food security. ‘Sipp Talk worked with Rootswell to produce SOIL, New Work by Justin Hardiman, in 2024 to showcase the beauty of the farmers and foodways surrounding the Clarksdale area.

That story aimed to tell about the people producing the crops and foods we consume, and to shed more light on the ways their work has impacted us all. The reopening of J’s Grocery continues that story by facing the consumers of those products with new opportunities to have sustainable sustenance. 

Through education and increased awareness, local people will be able to continue to circulate their dollars with trusted growers and farmers instead of relying on outside oversight of where their food is sourced, while learning new ways to engage with food traditions.
